Cusco South Valley Cusco South Valley & The Ancient Inca Cities The southern area of Cusco holds one of the archaeological marvels of the Incas in Tipon where we can contemplate the management of water that the Incas established by canalizing the flow that descends from the sacred mountain called Pachatusan. On the way, we can stop and visit Arariwakuna and give testimony about this project designed to preserve the agriculture of the Andes. We can also stop in Wasaw (or Huasao) where we can watch the Altomisa read about the future in Coca leaves and familiarize ourselves with the people that live in the suburban areas of Cusco where agriculture is their main occupation and thus not limit ourselves to the study of Inca remains. We shall then proceed along the southern valley to visit Pikillaqta, one of the ancient settlements (8th. Century) of the Wari culture in this area. The road south of Cusco leads us to Puno and Arequipa where we can find settlements at the foot of Wirakocha mountain which is important because the surrounding area contains remains of the wise men of the Incas that settled there. The town of Waro beside that mountain still preserves men and women dedicated to the preservation of healthy population and there is a museum that shows their techniques.
