Cusco Mansion & Colonial Houses Cusco has been a relatively small city if we consider its important past but because of that fact it possesses large house that belonged to a few land owners. Part of those owners were farmers, others were involved in commerce which takes us back to the exploitation of silver mines of Potosi. The great owner of land was the Catholic Church and in the case of the city it still is. This distribution of property allows us to show splendid buildings corresponding to the colonial age and although some have been turned into hotels they can be visited. There is the casa Cabrera on the Nazarenas square now turned into a museum of prehistoric art and as we take our way towards the Main Square we reach Maldonado’s house and witness its splendid architecture that now serves as an Inca museum. Then as we walk down San Agustin Street we will reach an ancient house (Casa Salas) with 4 sculptures of the owners which is now a hotel. As we continue our hike, we walk by Maruri Street and admire the remains of Inca buildings leading us to one of that traditional house turned into a Bank. One of the house we shall visit belonged to Clorinda Matto de Turner, a lady writer of the 19th. century where a social institution functions and continuing our tour visit the house of the Picoaga family of the 17th century now turned into a Hotel.
